and that lends of experience that experiences what we actually call karma
and so without exception
based on karma based on our past experience we construct or impute meaning
to our thoughts and our perceptions based on our experience we think we know what things are
and what we can begin by begin to do base by using this method
which is an analytical method ah we see
we begin to see what distorted by those experiences and what's distorted by the way those experiences are filtered through our ego or self centredness
and of course the goal
is the transformation of these senses the transformation of our mind leading to a so-called pure seeing and as he know we're going to leave time to discuss what that would that might be as well
at the same time that the the question that comes to me about learning this on them
buddhism as we understand it is a pet
ah and it's a pass that
presumably relieved from collusion to awakening
and the steps on the path or
points of cultivation
and of course we have a we have attention in the zen tradition because it talks about sudden awakening no steps know stages
and yet we also encourage people to cultivate virtues cultivate the precepts cultivate ah
the wholesome states of mind
one way of looking at it is the beneficial actions that we do
lead others towards beneficial action themselves and through and to the the healing of circumstances of their lives
and does the same for ourselves
and so along the pass what we're doing by really looking at resources were gradually removing the veils that that sit in front of our eyes ah so that's why i'm studying this deal
myself see more clearly through the delusion of self through self centredness and thereby to help serve people more effectively

is this how am i feeling now what's what is my what's going on in my body right now and then in a more ah

the first category is the consciousness of objects

it's the consciousness by which we impose this idea of me and i
on everything that we perceive and that we separate by which we separate me from you or me from this cup hum
which is an interesting process because when i hold the cup up to my lips and i drink from it then somehow the border in his cup is no longer separate from high it becomes incorporated in me
ah so that's a very particular activity is this i creation this self creation and everything that we
everything that we perceive is flavored by colored by that that self that self-perception
and then the third category is what's called a liar virginiana or storehouse consciousness
and this is the base of all of our not all of our knowledge it's the base of all of our experience ah
everything that we have done
exists as a ah a seed in the ally of virginiana and so the the mental process than that goes on his
so i see something
and that runs through the mechanism of manas a lot less than new put another they're seeing something
which runs through the mechanism of manas that says i am seeing something
that then goes down to the storehouse consciousness and
quite amazingly sorts through the entire universe of my experience and put together every likely relevant experience or if reverie likely relevant perception and brings that up to consciousness
and so it tells me what i think i'm seeing
and of course we can be deluded about this there's ah
there's the ah
the ancient in probably pre buddhist story about mistaking a
rope and a snake
you know a rope that's that's kind of winding around on the ground has many of the characteristics that are mind what might recognize as a snake or vice versa
and so we can ah
we can be diluted by these experiences in a we can miss identify what it is that we're seeing ah and
we can take it for real we can see a rope and scream and jump
or we can see a snake and think that are that rope and just try to step over get didn't
ah and we see every to be see all these things in peculiar proportion you know what is it
he had i've i've done this to what is it that ah that that makes me yell when i see a mouse
totally harmless miniscule little little animal but arm
somehow it induces fear in me and there's some some culturally programmed ah response i think so
that's really the quick review of these are
of the mind king of these categories of mind
now mano virginiana has which is which is the mind function good the sixth sense
is very interesting in that it ah it has two functions
one function is it it has a coordinating function
that it takes
the information that comes in through our sense organs
added it kind of shots it to the various ah aspect of the they are various areas of our brain by which we can discern things and and it does it very generally very effectively ah you know
usually we don't mistake a site for a smell
ah or something we feel for something we hear so it takes
it takes to
the sense impulses that are coming in through my eye looking at an object and directed towards the visual part of my brain and then back down to the

so apart from this kind of sorting and coordinating function

so it also is the home to
all of our afflictions are misperceptions are wrong are it's it's were wrong views arise ah and those arising views come up through this the distortion of this self centered

cause manners is essentially an unconscious function
what we're dealing with in terms of mine consciousness is that this is the way
we can work with our afflictions and r and r wholesome perceptions
and so
one way that you can think of it is that the mind king which includes the six senses
it includes modest increase a lie officina ah
one analogy is that a lion dances like a dancer
and manas
resembles a jester who is constantly trying to distract and fool the dancer
and that the senses and the mind
our the stage on which all this is taking place
and we get into look into the dorm next the mind the mind is like you can also think of it as the mind ah this monovision vision on is like a screen

and perception is where you begin to discern what the quality of that touch might be

we all have this these are all capacities of our mind ah
you then have
the object contingent factors
which on here ah desire is actually a pas the witt frame periods generally a a positive quality it is the know

and that's very refreshing it's not desire in the in the negative form of craving but you have these objects in fact it's all these factors only arise in relationship to things that we perceive
the third category are wholesome wholesome mental factors and these are very these are parallel you'll see a lot of overlap if we were really going into this you see a lot of overlap with ah with the eightfold path
with the ah
the factors of enlightenment with the parameters and so we you know we see things like faith
and ah
lack of anger flexibility not harming ah those these are also in line with the precepts
though there's a lot of overlap there these a wholesome factors then we have the we have the affliction
you know they have fog are six of the kenneth
over arching ones craving
we'll will pride ignorance doubt an incorrect views and that's a broad category interest in further broken down into these secondary afflictions
ah which are there's twenty of those and you look that list it's like now he's don't sound so good
and then you have six uncategorized factors which are not particular critically karmic ah drowsiness regret discovery and screw now ideally we should really look at all of these one by one but we're not would not have time for
that ah but i want you to think about that these when we when i was talking before about
dharmas are sometimes translated in some of them in some of them in somebody's text or dharmas gets translated as things
or as objects so what i was talking about ah the dharmas are to the functioning of mind as external objects or to the functioning of our five senses this is what i mean does that make sense
this is this is what we are looking this has both this is what we are looking at
ah and everything basically everything that comes up through the senses then gets sorted and referenced ah by way of
one or more of these diamonds so when we're doing meditation ah one of the activities of meditation if you're doing this kind of vacations actually looking at these states to mind so for example when i was saying a while ago that
when i get triggered by anger
i'm the first thing
you know that the habitual thing is to maybe lash out at the person i think who's to blame
i think that the
ballistic stick approach to it is to recognize oh
i'm really angry
and to look at look at the qualities of that anger
you know look i would look at where is it in my body
what are its whether it's characteristic does doesn't burn does an ache does it stick
mom and looking at it very carefully in both in a physical and mental way and
seeing how by bringing the light of awareness to it it changes
so the anger itself not the cause not the person not the event that the angered self in is located in my mind it becomes it's part of my subjectivity rather than projecting an externally which is what i want to do
you know i i really want to do it i really wanted i might really want to lash out at the person who made me angry but if i can step if i take one step back or half step back i can see of this is let me see how my mind is working now
