... [...] Good morning. For many of you, Roshi is a dear and beloved friend and great benefactor of Berkeley Zen Center. But for some of you, you may not know that Roshi is Suzuki Roshi's son. And so he is our Dharma grandfather.

[01:18]

Dharma father, and Utsu Roshi is our grandfather, and Suzuki Roshi is our great-grandfather. And he is also here with his son, Shula-san, and Tenyo-san, who is directing the social shoot office in San Francisco. And Utsu Roshi, thank you so much for coming to be with us. I didn't contemplate deeply, but I shall talk today, so words don't follow me.

[03:13]

Where is here? When you are doing garden, You are not sure where you are. That's [...] not sure where you are. Where is here?

[04:19]

Where are you? Where I am? Those things you cannot know. In Japan, I also do the Zen with people. And here, I do the Zen here with you. And I have the same thinking, same feeling. Wherever I go, when I do that, then I feel some kind of nostalgic feeling.

[05:47]

I feel as if we have met long, long time ago, and we have known each other. I feel like that. Thank you. You all have good posture, and I feel a deep gratitude as if the Buddha's are pleasing me.

[06:51]

The Buddha is not made out of wood or iron. The Buddha breezes and Buddha has worms. So you sit and [...] sit. When you sit, you are the Buddha. You don't have to do the whole Buddha. You don't have to do the whole Buddha far away place. so you mo no da to you koto ima koro no so ko kara omo te i do the i think that way from my deepest heart mina san no zazen wa watashi ni ooki na chikara wo atayete ir

[08:26]

What doesn't give me a great, great power?新参式おめでとうございます。新しい住職さんおめでとうございます。 Congratulations for everyone. During the mountain sea ceremony, the new artist will give you art.

[09:44]

At that time, the priest will say, In the seat of the Monji菩薩. In the seat of the Monji菩薩. And now, everyone, [...]

[11:01]

And as the Monju Vosatsu is going to say, please run from the new Abbot. And please, please. And please. And after her talk, he would say, as I want to show you for this supper, that look good, that that is the teaching of the Buddha. This is the teaching of the Buddha. I'm going to sit on the teacher and sit on the teacher.

[12:13]

This story comes from the story that in the long, long time ago, Chakamari Buddha, he was in the teaching seat. He said nothing. 静かに座っていらっしゃるだけでした。すると、文字菩薩が、よくご覧なさい。 That was the master's teaching. It was the truth.

[13:22]

He said, look carefully or listen carefully. That's the teaching of the shakamuni brother. What did he tell us? Zazenが私たちに伝えられた最初出発点. This is the beginning, start point when the Buddha taught us Zazen.

[14:26]

皆さんが Zazenをするとき釈尊がお座りになって When? When? So when you do dazen, the Buddha is sitting with you. Buddha is breathing and Buddha is sitting together.

[15:31]

So you don't really need to look out. So you are alone in the garden, sitting by yourself. It's that precious garden. If you are sitting like this, what do you need to want more?

[16:40]

And you are sitting like this. And the way of the Zazen, the Zazen path, is transmitted to the next or future. You may feel humbled about your Zazen, but your Zazen is the Zazen that is transmitted to the future. You learned the Zen from the past and beyond time.

[18:07]

Your Zen now becomes the center. And that then is transmitted beyond the time. Also horizontally, it's limitlessly transmitted. I am now living in Japan and I am involved for two monasteries.

[19:16]

One of the monasteries is called Tokyo別院, which is in Tokyo, and I do the training monks there. Another monastery is Toshouji in Oka-yama, and I also do the Zen there. Sometimes people ask me.

[20:26]

There is a war in the world. If I just do the Zen by myself, what is useful for? If I do the Zen like this, the war will end. So, I was questioned like this, actually, many times.

[21:48]

Everyone has a very warm heart. So you cannot dismiss the other people's suffering. Is that true for you too? Is that true for you too? Shall we stop the Zen and we walk with the banner? That time I asked the person, how about you?

[22:51]

Do you have any conflicts in your heart? Do you have any hate in your heart? Do you have any hate in your heart? The Zen is not only for one person. If your mind is very peaceful, there will be one more person who has a peaceful mind.

[23:53]

watching you peaceful watching you peaceful that the peaceful world will emerge私の父親鈴木俊龍は亡くなるちょっと前これは聞いた話ですが My father, Shunryu Suzuki, he said a little before he passed away. One person has come to his bed and ask a question. We do Zazen and what happens to the Vietnamese war.

[25:26]

He woke up. He woke his body up even though he was at a final stage. And he patted on the shoulder of that person. And he, like very strong voice, he said, you still don't understand? You don't understand yet? Our Dazen may be powerless, but it also has a big, big power.

[26:36]

One old monk from Japan came and see many people got the peace in mind. We believe in the power of the Zen and keep practicing. In China, a long time ago, there was a monk called Yaku-san Iguen.

[28:19]

He's a nabot, but he didn't do dharma talks for a while. Everyone was waiting a long time, and finally, the bell for the start of the lecture, Everyone delighted and come together. And Yaku-san again ascended the teaching seat. But he didn't say anything. Someone said, We are waiting.

[29:36]

Why don't you talk? And then Yaku-san again replied, if you want to study the sutra, ask for the sutra scholar. If you like to study the Buddhist philosophy, ask for the philosopher. There are those... Yes, there are scholars.

[30:37]

Why you don't ask them? He said so, and just sit silently. Oh... You can sit down and [...] sit down. When you are sitting, you observe the place that's coming in, and you observe the place that's coming out.

[31:38]

And you observe the place that's coming out. If you want to hear a complicated talk, you can ask all those people. You're doing that then. observing yourself.

[32:56]

And you don't know when, but probably you are going to convey the peaceful mind to someone. Big, deep and non-discriminating heart. In this Zazen, in this quiet breathing, those big mind is contained inside the Zazen.

[34:32]

Daruma Daishiya, Daikan Enoho Zenjiya,道元 Zenjiya,大祖慶山 Zenjiya, I生懸命に伝えようとしたのがこの座禅の道であるから Many ancestors in the past, like Bodhi Daman, Tai Soeka, Dogen Zenji, Keizan Zenji, they are trying to teach about this Zazen. You can read many complicated books.

[36:00]

I'm ashamed that I didn't read many difficult books, but my father, Shunryu Suzuki said, it might be good to study. I didn't have a lot of勉強. Because I didn't study much. When it comes to the knowledge in the Zen, maybe you have more knowledge. He mentioned that I was there.

[37:11]

I was the train. I did train there. He mentioned that I was there. He mentioned that I was there. He mentioned that I was there. More than half of the training monks at Toshiojin Okayama is monks from other countries other than Japan. Yeah, so most people training there are ordained monks or nuns and yeah, more than half is

[38:35]

people not from Japan, outside Japan. Maybe approximately young people are about half. I'm not young. So relatively old person is another half. Half is women.

[39:37]

About half is men. About half is men. There are also some day practitioners who come from other countries. It's a good monastery. Please come. There are many training monks in Toshioji, but Toshioji is a poor monastery.

[41:08]

And I think you will love it there. Sorry, I might be rude. The other monastery I mentioned, Tokyo別院 in Tokyo, we only have Japanese men monks. Very busy schedule. We do Zazen, Sutra chanting, and there are also a lot of ceremonies for the

[42:51]

their families, and they're working very hard. Please come to practice. I was asked to say so, so I said... Daikon山の永平寺も昔と随分変わってきましたから、昔みたいに乱暴な修行の道場ではありませんから、どうか永平寺も来てください。

[43:58]

Aheiji also changed a lot. It's not as violent anymore. So please come. There are a lot of things you can do there, including Zazen. I was also asked to say this. Please. The teacher of Bodhi Dharma is Hanyatara Sonja. One day, Han Yatara Sonja said to the Bodhi Dharma, Please go to China and teach Zazen.

[45:40]

Then Bodhita man came to Japan, went to a temple in a high mountain and he went to a cave and he was doing zazen. Then someone came to the gate.

[46:45]

In the snow, he asked to be a student of Bodhidharma, but the Bodhidharma didn't even give a look. The person who asked to be a student, he stood in the snow and he began to cry. He was watching his tears with the eyes filled with tears. And he asked, please make my heart peaceful.

[48:11]

And then Bodhi Dharma said, So please bring your heart. If you bring your heart and show it to me, maybe I can make your heart peaceful. And the person said, No, I cannot take out the heart. Then Bodhidharma said, So, your heart or mind is already set.

[49:39]

We do the Zen facing ourselves. We do the Zen facing the Zen. When I was a kid, I didn't have a lot of learning. When I was a kid, When I was little, I didn't like studying much. Around 10 years old, I remember in the classroom, I was watching the glasses and also the trees and in the wind.

[50:57]

The teacher said, Please, go ahead and study. The school teacher said, Face toward here and study hard. Now I can understand his teaching. Zazen is doing Zazen facing Zazen. So when you are doing Zazen, what you hear today, please forget everything.

[52:10]

忘れて、自分の方を向いて、座禅の方を向いて、吸う息を吸い終わるまで、吐く息を吐き終わるまで、 Forget about everything you feel graceful about. You're just facing the Zen, face yourself, with a going out place and coming in the place.

[53:39]

And this is the reality. This is the real Buddha. Things are numberless. I vow to awaken with them. Illusions are inexhaustible. I did that on the books to write them. [...] Thank you.

[55:06]

I think I don't want to do anything with them. [...] I don
