Sojun Ordains a New Priest

On October 17 in the zendo Sojun Roshi ordained Doko Kika Susan Hellein as a priest, with online participation in the ceremony of over seventy-five members and friends. Kika’s Dharma name, given by Sojun at jukai, means Path Light/Returning Home. Kika came to BZC in 2012 and has been an active BZC community member, serving in a variety of practice positions. From January 2017 through summer 2019 she lived and practiced at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She is currently a BZC resident. We celebrate Kika’s ordination and her passion for the practice we treasure together.

So, the next step would be for Candidate Kika to make some appreciative vows to people who have been significant in her life. Not all of them are here. In fact, only one of them is here. So the first is a lot of appreciation to your parents and friends, whether or not they took up your invitation or not. Okay.

[01:17]

Okay. So now, the next section in this ordination is giving you your priest's cloak and head shaving. Yeah, head shaving. Okay. This is the first of two head shavings. Only the mind of a bodhisattva can cut through this drifting, wandering life

[02:58]

and take the path of nirvana. This virtue cannot be defined. Only the mind of Bodhisattva can cut through thisricting, wandering life, and take the path of nirvana. This virtue cannot be defined. In our past, present, and future karma, the bonds of attachment are hard to break. Realization beyond the realm of karma is the offering of true compassion. In our past, present, and future karma, The bonds of attachment are harder to break.

[04:03]

Realization beyond the realm of karma is the offering of true compassion. In this world of birth and death, when we realize our imperturbable ways of the mind, what is, is right at hand.

[05:17]

In this world of birth and death, When we realize our imperturbable way-thinking mind, bodhi is right here. This very beginner's mind, Bodhisattva's know, has a measurably root of mind. Not even a Buddha can define it. In this world of birth and death, when we realize our imperturbable way-seeking mind, Bodhi is right at hand. This very beginner's mind, Bodhisattva's know, as immaturely deep and wide,

[06:20]

Nadi Stuti so

[07:25]

so Okay. Okay.

[09:15]

I don't know how to change it. This final hair is called the shura. Only a Buddha could cut it off. Now I will cut it off. Will you allow me to cut it off? I will. This last hair is called the shura. Only a Buddha could cut it off. Now I will cut it off. Will you allow me to cut it off? I will. This last hair is called the shura. Only a Buddha Will you allow me to cut it off?

[11:03]

I will. Cutting your attachments, you are now on the path of Buddha with a mind of complete enlightenment.

[12:18]

You will free all beings from suffering. Freed from my worldly attachments. Freed from my ancient karma. Freed from form and color. Everything is changed. Accept my desire to live in truth with all beings. At this time, I would ordinarily give a new name, or at least one new name, to someone who had already been named, because you have your name in the ordination.

[13:53]

Who would want to change that name? I think that the tradition of changing names partly comes from when you are, in most lineages, you receive one name when you have, um, um, um, And then you're given another name when you have ordination, or when you are given dharma transmission. Otherwise, there's no need to give another name. Suzuki Roshi gave me one name, and then Honitsu completed it with my transmission name, which is Akutmi. But I do want to explain a little about Umi. And ko is light.

[15:18]

The path of light. And kika means returning home. So, in fact, this is all about following the path and returning home. It's not a good first. Oh, it's more than that.

[16:45]

I'll be right back. Okay. I don't go. Receive it. you

Dai, zai, ge, da, bu, ku, mu, so, fu, ku, den, e, ee, bu, nyon, rai, kyo. Now we open Buddha's room, a field far beyond form and emptiness, Sattva Tathagata's teaching for all beings.

[21:34]

[23:19]

You have been freed from greed, hate, and delusion.

[29:44]

Good disciple, now you may live in the way of the Three Treasures. Even after acquiring Buddhahood, will you continue this truthful practice? I will. We have purified our body and mind. Now you may receive the passive precepts of the three treasures.

[30:52]

The beauty of human life. You are seated with Buddha and I'm really his child. Will you receive these precepts? I will. Now I return to Buddha. Now I return to Buddha. Now I return to Dharma. Even after acquiring Buddhahood, When you allow this compassionate path of the three treasures that I am now passing to you, follow the path of the three treasures that I am now passing to you. I resolve not to sell or use the wine or drugs of delusion. I resolve not to dwell on the mistakes of others, but to create wisdom from ignorance.

[34:20]

I resolve not to praise myself and downgrade others, but to maintain modesty, putting others first. I resolve not to withhold spiritual or material aid, but to share understanding, giving freely of self. I resolve not to harbor ill will, but to dwell in equanimity. I resolve not to abuse the three In respecting the Buddha, unfolding the Dharma, and nourishing the Sangha.

[35:22]

Abiding according to the ten clear-mind precepts, even after acquiring Buddhahood, when you continue to observe them. I will.
